Saddle up and step into authentic Western culture in the heart of the Fort Worth Stockyards—where the West begins!
Traditionally the last stop for drovers herding their cattle up the Chisholm Trail, the Fort Worth Stockyards were a welcome respite to recharge before pushing north. More than 4 million cattle moved through the historic Stockyards between 1866 and 1890. Meat-packing plants were built nearby around the turn of the century, and the Fort Worth Stockyards became a mecca for cattlemen. It continued to flourish through World War II, and more than 5.2 million head of livestock trekked through the Stockyards in 1944 alone.
Now designated as a national historic district, the Fort Worth Stockyards holds true to its cowboy roots in a way that’s intertwined with modern entertainment and conveniences that attract more than 8 million visitors annually. It still hosts the world’s only twice-daily cattle drive and weekly rodeo, and events like the Red Steagall Cowboy Gathering help share Western culture with a whole new crop of enthusiasts each year.
